About the Workshop

Suitable for educators teaching grades 4 -12
Join curriculum specialist Devin Winter, Counting on Grace author Elizabeth Winthrop, and museum director Miriam Block as they share insights and strategies you can bring directly into your classroom.

This professional development experience blends hands-on learning, meaningful discussion, and dedicated planning time—so you leave inspired and ready to implement.

What we’ll explore:

  • How visual primary sources—like Lewis Hine’s photographs—can serve as entry points for historical inquiry, empathy, creative writing, and civic action in the classroom.

  • How visiting the Winooski Mill Museum with students can deepen critical thinking, engagement, and real-world connections.

By the End of the Day:

  • Analyze Primary Sources: Investigate child labor—past and present—by interpreting primary source photographs from the museum’s exhibits.

  • Bring History to Life Through Writing: Use historical and contemporary photographs to inspire research and creative writing, helping students build empathy and connect with real human experiences.

  • Design Inquiry-Driven Lessons: Apply the C3 Inquiry Design Model to create a meaningful lesson(s), featuring a compelling question, primary source(s), and authentic formative tasks.

  • Connect Learning to Civic Action: Explore ways to bridge historical inquiry with contemporary issues, empowering students to see themselves as informed and active participants in their communities.
